Speaker 2Ghost Action. You don't have your lines.
Speaker 1No, okay, we don't even have a script so no, we have a general guideline.
Speaker 2We should have memorized our lines by now.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2No, no, nothing, no, all right, do you want to start this? Yeah, how are you feeling? Feeling good.
Speaker 1Yeah, ready, what Ready. Oh, I heard pretty. Are you pretty? How do you feel? Pretty, do you feel?
Speaker 2pretty, do you feel pretty? Oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty.
Speaker 1And gay.
Speaker 2Oh, all right, I was thinking you'd feel bright.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2But you feel gay.
Speaker 1I feel gay.
Speaker 2All right, do you want to start this?
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Today's ghosty drink.
Speaker 1Yeah, I have not seen it.
Speaker 2I shook it up just now.
Speaker 1It's all shook up. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha ha, he's laughing.
Speaker 2Ha ha, ha, ha ha ha. All right, our flavor for today, ooh pink. I was thinking since we have our drunk live Mad Libs tomorrow and we're usually pink themed for our drinks at least our alcoholic beverages are usually pink I figured we'd have a pink ghosty energy drink, sour pink lemonade Huh, cool.
Speaker 1Looks cool. Yeah, there we go, and you can purr.
Speaker 2Purr Gone. Hello and welcome to Roasty Toasty Ghosty. My name is Lauren.
Speaker 1And I'm Matias.
Speaker 2And we're going to be your besties for the next hour or so.
Speaker 1Yep.
Speaker 2Maybe We'll see Matias.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2How are you doing?
Speaker 1I am tired, but I'm good I didn't even take a sip. No, neither did I. It's gonna be interesting. My glass is wet. Yes, neither did I, it's going to be interesting.
Speaker 2My glass is wet. Yes, it has liquids inside.
Speaker 1Yeah, but it's wet on the outside.
Speaker 2Yeah, I put liquids on the outside.
Speaker 1Yeah, I thought the liquids were supposed to stay on the inside.
Speaker 2Oh, you were wrong.
Speaker 1Yeah, what did?
Speaker 2you think about this one?
Speaker 1Does it taste?
Speaker 2like pink lemonade.
Speaker 1Sour pink lemonade. I really don't know what that is, but it wasn't bad. I kind of liked it. Yeah, it's good. Yeah, you liked it too.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it's pink.
Speaker 1Yeah, this one was a good one. I think this one goes on the shelf. Yeah, since it's pink.
Speaker 2It has to.
Speaker 1All the pink drinks go on the shelf.
Speaker 2So yeah, you're good.
Speaker 1That's cool. How are you?
Speaker 2I'm also good. Are you also tired A little bit? I'm okay, I'm okay, I'm feeling all right. You want to talk about the week?
Speaker 1Yeah, let's do that. Because, this week, we might know exactly what we did last weekend.
Speaker 2I know that I had a gymnastics show yeah that I, I did and you were working I was oh, yeah, okay oh yeah oh yeah, no, I remember what I did afterwards I had a pizza party with my kids in which we got a family pizza for the four of us my three kids and myself. Yeah, my life partner was out on a Christmas dinner with his Colleagues.
Speaker 1Colleagues.
Speaker 2That's a word.
Speaker 1Did you divide the pizza evenly so everyone got like no, no, no Well it wasn't like you get this quarter and I'll take this quarter.
Speaker 2It was more like you take as little as possible and I'll take the rest yeah, that's how I do it that's exactly what happened, and yeah I mean they don't eat much otherwise no, they don't.
Speaker 1I ate most of the pizza I mean a regular size pizza would have been enough.
Speaker 2probably yeah probably, but no, no, no. I was thinking I'm going to be a fun mom and we're going to have a pizza party and it's going to be really fun. No, well, it was fun. We decorated for Christmas.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And we built a gingerbread house.
Speaker 1Nice, it was good, I saw it, good picture. Nice, it was good, I saw it, good picture.
Speaker 2Yeah, you didn't see it in real life though, did you?
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2No, Because the next day we smashed it and ate it with ice cream.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2But the fluff that we had randomly gotten, or sorry, you bought, but I ordered it, I did yeah. It makes good glue for gingerbread houses. That's good, yeah, because I was trying to think while I was at the gymnastics show, because my daughter was also a part of it. I wasn't thinking about fluff while doing gymnastics.
Speaker 1So you weren't like fluff, fluff, fluff.
Speaker 2I'm thinking gingerbread houses and fluff. Yeah, when you did like a flip, a flip, you know no no, um, I was thinking, if I don't have like the, the baking glue, or like the frosting glue, whatever you want to call it, or even caramel I don't know what it is.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2And I'm pretty sure the fluff would do it because it is messy.
Speaker 1It is.
Speaker 2And it is very, very firm. Yeah, and sticky, sticky, and so we put some in the like little tube things that you would do frosting with, and we use that for the glue and it worked very nicely.
Speaker 1Good.
Speaker 2Yeah, we decorated and everything and we had a really nice evening.
Speaker 1A question about the pizza Okay.
Speaker 2We're going back to pizza.
Speaker 1Yeah, pizza, did you make a house? No, no.
Speaker 2I did not, but that would have been a good idea, yeah.
Speaker 1No, my question was going to be what kind of pizza was it?
Speaker 2We had salami on the pizza. Salami. It's really good, though. I like it.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, you are entitled to like it. Thank you, did I use that word correctly?
Speaker 2I think so Good yeah. What about Sunday? Did you do anything fun on Saturday other than working?
Speaker 1No, then I just went home and had a boring night.
Speaker 2Cool, that sounds nice.
Speaker 1I mean, I just do my sporing stuff Sporing.
Speaker 2No, okay, my boring stuff. Blah, blah blah, Nothing else.
Speaker 1No. Okay, or am I forgetting something?
Speaker 2I don't know. Well, I wasn't there.
Speaker 1No, that's what I'm thinking, and maybe we did something. We went for a walk or something.
Speaker 2I don't think we went for a walk. No, I didn't see you on Sunday.
Speaker 1Okay, good, good, I didn't even want to see you even want to see you.
Speaker 2I didn't want to see you either, but are we fighting?
Speaker 1are we fighting now or were we fighting on sunday? On sunday I was maybe, now maybe both. Yeah, yeah, why not?
Speaker 2I don't know. I'm sure we'll figure it out yeah yeah, we'll come to an agreement at some point. What did I do on sunday?
Speaker 1you should know these things um, I don't know, I don't know either, I don't know either. I hated you then.
Speaker 2Yeah, we were fighting.
Speaker 1I guess yeah.
Speaker 2Well, all I can remember is the gingerbread house.
Speaker 1Yeah, you ate it.
Speaker 2We ate it with ice cream and we watched Elf.
Speaker 1I love that movie.
Speaker 2Or, I'm sorry, my oldest watched Elf, while myself and the other two kids slept on the couch. Okay, yep, that's what happened okay, that's okay.
Speaker 1It's a good movie though it is.
Speaker 2That was that. That was the weekend for you. Anything fun for the week fun for the week not really. We haven't gone to the gym, no, at all.
Speaker 1No, it's been too much of the overtime. Yeah, a lot of overtime now.
Speaker 2I did overtime on Wednesday.
Speaker 1Yeah, oh yeah. You didn't tell people about your doctor's appointment last week. Maybe you want to say that.
Speaker 2Yeah, I did have a doctor's appointment last week, not this week.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2What happened? I thought that we were going to decide if I was going to get my knees operated on or not, but instead I was told by this second opinion doctor that I have interesting knees. He finds them very interesting.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And he's going to bring my case to another doctor a fancy doctor in Stockholm, and maybe some other doctors who might have an idea of what is wrong with my knees, Because apparently, well, they are unstable and at first I was told that they were not sitting exactly where they're supposed to be, and this time I was told that they are, but I don't know. It looks kind of weird, I don't know. The measurements were right, but the placement was weird.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2Or something like that, and he felt the need to let me know that I am big down here in my leg area and small up here in my torso area. I was like, yes, so I've been told.
Speaker 1I haven't noticed.
Speaker 2People like to point these things out. I mean, I have big legs.
Speaker 1So weird to say it's not like you could affect that.
Speaker 2Is it so weird that? I have big legs and a small torso.
Speaker 1I don't know if that's weird, but that he had to point that out.
Speaker 2He's not the only person either.
Speaker 1No, but are all doctors like that? No, I don't know. I wouldn't expect a doctor to say that no, because they should know better.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't expect a doctor to say that no, because they should know better. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe he was just trying to say that I was like big boned in my legs or something I have big bone legs.
Speaker 1Big leg bones.
Speaker 2I have big leg bones.
Speaker 1Leg bones.
Speaker 2Leg bones. I don't know. I don't know what the problem was exactly.
Speaker 1But it's good that he pointed it out for you. Now't know, I don't know what the problem was exactly, but it's good that he pointed it out for you. Yeah, now I know.
Speaker 2Yeah, I was like ah, that's the problem. Yeah, Solved it.
Speaker 1Yeah, exactly, I mean.
Speaker 2Case closed.
Speaker 1You had your suspicions but you didn't know. Now you know from an expert Right he's in. Now you know from an expert Right he said big legs, small torso.
Speaker 2Thank you, Very helpful. Yeah, I wonder who's next. Who's the next person who's going to point out that I have large legs? So far it's been a stranger in a parking lot and my doctor. So what next? My, maybe, yeah, maybe, a bus driver. Hey, you have big legs, yeah you're look at those big legs coming up on my bus.
Speaker 1Yeah, like yes, all right, thank you, big legs. Back in the bus, back in the bus, big legs, the dogs and the big legs back in the bus.
Speaker 2Back in the bus big legs, the dogs and the big legs back in the bus.
Speaker 1The big bones? Yeah, we need the weights back in the bus.
Speaker 2Weight in the back, yeah.
Speaker 1More weight in the back, please.
Speaker 2Alright. Well, that was that. I'm sorry for that. My feelings are hurt.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2And now we're going to move on. Anything else you want to mention about the week. Today is Friday.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2And I got a big package today. I wasn't allowed to get it.
Speaker 1No, you couldn't it was a home delivery.
Speaker 2I asked my boss if I'd go receive it from the delivery guy and she said no, you may not leave. So I asked my ex-husband to come by and take it for me. And he had to sign it for me and everything, and he left it in front of the door it was standing. He sent a picture of it standing in front of the door when we got here. It was laying down.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And I live in an apartment where you know people will have to go around this box to get up the stairs, and so I'm assuming that was inconvenient. I don't know how it fell over. I hope it's not broken.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Anyway, I got a big package, it's a treadmill it is. I'm very excited about it is that from yourself? That is my christmas present to me. Yeah good I get myself the best presents yeah you also get the best present. So from you, from me, yeah I like to think that I'm good at getting presents. I'm not good at wrapping presents.
Speaker 1I am good at wrapping presents.
Speaker 2I just don't do it.
Speaker 1Yeah, but you sure complain about if other people actually wrap their presents.
Speaker 2I'm more judgmental of other people than myself.
Speaker 1Yeah, I wonder if the complaining is your.
Speaker 2It's a reflection.
Speaker 1Yeah, your insecurity about not rapping.
Speaker 2I'm sure that's exactly what it is. Yeah, solved you. Yep, we are answering lots of questions. Today we're on a roll.
Speaker 1Yeah, lauren's going to cry.
Speaker 2I'm going to cry today. Let's do speaking of crying. Let's do a weight update. Oh yeah, let's see who wants to go first.
Weight Loss, Movie Reviews, Sibling Rivalry
Speaker 1I can go first. Okay, I lost 1.3 kilograms.
Speaker 2Good job.
Speaker 1Since last week.
Speaker 2I surprisingly, I did lose weight.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I lost 0.7. Oh, mean that's good, it's almost one hole kilo oh okay, one hole you lost a hole, I lost a hole kilo kilo yeah a kilo hole almost. Almost, Almost. Yeah, that's okay. Yeah, it's been. I mean, after that entire pizza and the ice cream and the gingerbread cake or house, gingerbread house, not cake, it's been difficult, it's still good.
Speaker 1Yeah, you lost weight.
Speaker 2I gained a lot and somehow I managed to drop it.
Speaker 1Yeah, I like the somehow.
Speaker 2Somehow I don't know Somehow I lost it. I don't know how that happened, but it did. Hopefully I don't have to struggle so much this time. I've been trying to be careful.
Speaker 1Yeah, and I hope I can keep going down. That would be good too, yeah.
Speaker 2I'm a treadmill now. I don't have excuses.
Speaker 1No, that's true.
Speaker 2Today is Friday the 13th.
Speaker 1Ooh.
Speaker 2December 13th 2024. It's almost the end of the year.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's Lucia, right, idon.
Speaker 2Today the end of the year, yeah it's lucia right. All right. So today we watched Surrogates, surrogates.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2And.
Speaker 1Jag kommer hem igen till jul.
Speaker 2Yes, the titles are so long. Yeah, I can't remember them.
Speaker 1Jag kommer hem igen till jul.
Speaker 2I'll be home for Christmas.
Speaker 1Yeah, kind of.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's what it means.
Speaker 2Yeah, I would like to tell you about surrogates.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2Surrogates. Yeah, surrogates, surrogates, surrogates.
Speaker 1Yeah, don't ask me about the pronunciation.
Speaker 2Surrogates, yeah, surgeons.
Speaker 1Surrogates, surrogates, surgeons, surgeons Sargents.
Speaker 2Sargents, I don't get it.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2I don't understand what's going on.
Speaker 1Is that a corn thing?
Speaker 2Yeah, that's a corn thing.
Speaker 1It's not a corn.
Speaker 2Thing.
Speaker 1No, I think it's a pepper thing. Oh, sergeant.
Speaker 2Sergeant Pepper, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Speaker 1Sargents the Colonel, that's a corn thing.
Speaker 2Oh, that's a pepper thing, mm-hmm.
Speaker 1Okay, I think so, I don't know.
Speaker 2No, I don't get it.
Speaker 1But please tell me about surrogates.
Speaker 2Surrogates. Yeah, let's call it that. So this is a movie with Bruce Willis.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And.
Speaker 1Did you have a problem with it? I did. Please tell me about the problem.
Speaker 2I'm going to tell you about this movie okay, okay. So in the world, in this world, it's a sci-fi movie, right?
Speaker 1It is.
Speaker 2And everyone has a robot clone of themselves pretty much, yeah, a better version of themselves. A younger version.
Speaker 1Yeah, younger A more attractive version, but they're not fat.
Speaker 2No, the robots aren't fat. Not the people either. Younger, a more attractive version, but they're not fat. No, the robots aren't fat.
Speaker 1Not the people either, somehow.
Speaker 2I'm not there yet.
Speaker 1I'm not there yet. Hold on.
Speaker 2So everyone has this robot version of themselves that goes out and does things for them. Yeah, and Bruce Willis's robot had blonde hair and I didn't like it. No, I wanted to turn off the movie when I saw him with blonde hair and I didn't like it. No I wanted to turn off the movie when I saw him with blonde hair.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2No, I don't like it, but I watched the whole thing anyway.
Speaker 1Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2So what happens is that there's these people who are anti-robots, and I'm not really sure what happens they start, like killing the robots, which makes the the human yeah, the humans die as well yeah they have a special gun that yeah, yeah, and that's the bad people, mm-hmm. And Bruce Willis is trying to save the people.
Speaker 1Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2And yeah, the host humans are not super fat, as they probably should be. Yeah, but they're not super skinny either.
Speaker 1No, not all of them. Not all of them, no, but some are. And yeah, that's so weird to me, but a lot of them were a bit heavier them no, but some are.
Speaker 2And that's so weird to me, but a lot of them were a bit heavier, not super fat.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2I would think that WALL-E.
Speaker 1If it would have been my movie, they would have all been like the people in WALL-E.
Speaker 2Yeah, and that would make sense.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2But that's not how it was.
Speaker 1Could you see Bruce Willis in a fat suit running around like he did in this movie?
Speaker 2That would be funny.
Speaker 1Yeah, I want to see that Add some comedy to it.
Speaker 2Why not?
Speaker 1Yeah, why so serious, exactly?
Speaker 2So yeah, that's what I had to say about that.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2Did you ask if I liked the movie?
Speaker 1Well, I.
Speaker 2I didn't like that. He had blonde hair. No, okay, his robot, at least Exactly the other one didn't have hair at all no, the human version.
Speaker 1Yeah, the older version.
Speaker 2He looked better than his robot.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Actually I was interested in this movie. It interested me.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I did like him.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2The only thing I didn't like was his hair.
Speaker 1Yeah, that was a big problem it was but luckily that robot didn't have all screen time right, he wasn't always there no, he got lost somehow.
Speaker 2We're not gonna tell how what did you think about the movie?
Speaker 1this is the first time I saw this movie oh yeah, um, so it's that's interesting. Interesting, I I have been drinking energy drinks but still pink lemonade yeah, um, no, I'm tired, but I don't know. I never really thought about watching this movie before, but now that I haven't, I must say that I I liked it. It was much better than I thought it would be, so it was actually pretty interesting and, uh, yeah, I I'm glad that we watched this one actually I like when there's movies that we watch for the first time together yeah, this was one of those, and last week was one of those.
Speaker 1That wasn't very good maybe, but that was the Second World War.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, I didn't know what was going on.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2So lost, so uninterested yeah.
Speaker 1But no, I did like this one and yeah, the only thing that I found weird was the you know the hair. No, not the hair. That was your problem. My problem was that the people weren't that fat.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1They should have been fatter.
Speaker 2Right, yeah, that's it.
Speaker 1Let's move on to. Jag kommer hem igen till jul.
Speaker 2I'll be home for Christmas.
Speaker 1Yes, yeah, the Swedish version. Yes, yeah, the Swedish version. Yes, okay, so it stars Peter Jöbak, who did the Swedish voice for Aladdin. Oh yeah, we heard him, it wasn't last we saw him?
Speaker 2Yeah, Last weekend or the weekend before last weekend? Yeah, okay, that's yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah, we saw him then, or a little bit of him, just a few, maybe like two minutes.
Speaker 2You know, I would have been a lot more excited if we had seen this movie before we saw him.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2But I don't think either of us really knew he was going to be there. No, did you know he was going to be there. No, okay, so it was a pleasant surprise.
Speaker 1Yeah, if I had known, I probably would have put this on sooner.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1But I kind of like that we watched it today, since it's Lucia here.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1And there's a lot of singing in this one. Yeah, so it felt like yeah, pretty fitting for Lucia.
Speaker 2I feel like I would have been a lot more excited to stay and listen to him had I known who he was. If I was even slightly familiar with him.
Speaker 1Yeah, so this movie is about Peter Jöbak, who is a star? He's a star in the land of USA, United States of America, or he's a world star? Is that a word that I can use?
Speaker 2He's a big celebrity.
Speaker 1Yeah, big shot. Yeah. So and he comes back to his home or to his family this Christmas. He hasn't been back in years. He meets his older brother, who isn't as successful as he is, and there's kind of a rivalry there's tension. Yeah, sibling tension between them and the family in general. They all have their problems. It seems like.
Speaker 2Lots of drama.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's a very dramatic movie.
Speaker 2Like last week's Swedish movie Lots of drama.
Speaker 1Lots of drama. There was more comedy in last week's swedish movie. Yeah, lots of drama, lots of drama. It was more comedy in last week's, though it had some comedy in it, a few quotes here and there. It's more of a drama this one, though they had very special traditions in this one they sang a lot of songs around the table and I want that tradition too. Yeah, and singing around the Christmas tree and everything, and their uncle was like playing the trumpet a lot.
Speaker 2And the like talent show, kind of Christmas show that they would put on for their family.
Speaker 1Yeah, kind of cute.
Speaker 2I like that family. Yeah, kind of cute. I like that idea yeah.
Speaker 1If people didn't interrupt being all dramatic and stuff.
Speaker 2Yeah, that would be nice.
Speaker 1It's an okay movie. It's not my favorite. I wasn't planning on having it on the list, although it's on your side, so it feels like I'm controlling your side as well. Now that's okay. Could have been worse. It could have been better okay, so it's okay all right okay, what? What did you think about this movie?
Speaker 2I like this movie okay it was a good one.
Speaker 1I liked it it was a good one it was a good one.
Speaker 2Yeah, okay, I liked it good, yeah, I'm.
Speaker 1I'm glad that you liked it.
Speaker 2I really like the Christmas show tradition, though we should start that.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2We should do that for New Year's.
Speaker 1Okay, we'll have a.
Speaker 2New Year's talent show.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Okay, that's what we're going to do.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2That's the plan.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I'm deciding now. Yeah, You'll probably be here for New Year's right.
Speaker 1Yeah, probably Okay.
Speaker 2Would you like to wrap this up?
Speaker 1No, this is what I meant no.
Speaker 2Would you like to take a break?
Speaker 1Yeah, let's take a break.
Speaker 2All right, we're going to do that then. Yeah, and we'll be right back. Yes, hello, hello and welcome back.
Speaker 1Yeah, hello and welcome back. Hello and welcome back. I don't know why I said that, because you already said it, but I felt like it would be fitting if I said it as well, because I don't know what else to say. So maybe you can overlap those when we say it both.
Speaker 2I don't know. No, it sounds like work.
Speaker 1You shouldn't, but it would be funny.
Speaker 2Yeah, maybe We'll see. So part two is this part.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Cool.
Speaker 1I'm very cool.
Speaker 2Uh, what are we doing today? Do you know?
Speaker 1Yeah, we had two different suggestions.
Speaker 2And I think that we can get to both of them at some point Okay. But first we have to decide what the first thing is.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Today's Friday the 13th.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2We've covered this is, yeah, today's Friday, the 13th. Yes, we've covered this before yeah. But it's also Lucia.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Which is a Swedish holiday.
Speaker 1Yeah, probably we don't get the day off.
Speaker 2No, so it's not that big of a deal.
Speaker 1No, it's just that we acknowledge Lucia. Yeah, people are singing in church.
Speaker 2We acknowledge Lucia. Yeah, people are singing in church. Well, can you tell me the tradition of Lucia to start off with?
Speaker 1The tradition, I mean they pick out one girl who gets to be the Lucia. And she's like a leader of a bunch of people singing. She wears all white, not a dress, but like a robe robe, yeah, and she has like um crown, uh, with candles in it. She holds her hands like this and I don't even it looks like she's praying right and uh, she's just walking, though she's not singing, she's just walking there.
Speaker 2She's not singing. Oh, she doesn't sing.
Speaker 1She's not supposed to sing Okay, and apparently she's supposed to be a virgin. Oh, I didn't know that before, but you told me.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1And they said it in a movie.
Speaker 2In Blackjack.
Speaker 1Yeah and yeah. The other people behind her, the people she's leading, they are the ones doing the singing.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1And most of them are girls, also, with white robes and just holding a candle in their hand. They don't have the crown, it's just a Lucia. They usually have the glitter things.
Speaker 2Like sparkly headbands yeah.
Speaker 1And they call them tärnor Dice, not tärningar.
Speaker 2Oh Okay, they gamble.
Speaker 1Yeah, they roll around on the floor and say six For the virgin, yeah, I'm only a two. Oh no, no, that's not it, okay so.
Speaker 2Ten, or what's that Ten? I don Okay, so Um.
Speaker 1Tan or yes? What's that? Tan Um? I don't know what it is, I just know the.
Speaker 2Can I look? Yeah, sure Okay.
Speaker 1And I'll tell the people about the rest of the people. Sometimes there's a Santa, oh yeah, and also there are. It's a bridesmaid.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, and also there are. It's a bridesmaid.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, that's true, it's a bridesmaid.
Speaker 2That's weird. It's not a wedding, is it? No, no, no.
Speaker 1Okay, so there's sometimes a Santa or several gingerbread men. They are supposed to be three of them.
Speaker 2Oh, okay.
Speaker 1Yeah, they are three. They're supposed to be three, only three. And I remember that I was one of the gingerbread men when I did it in school and I didn't have all brown clothes, so I got to have black clothes and be a burnt gingerbread man, you were burnt gingerbread, okay. Yeah, but yeah, there are also boys or guys that have white robes and a cone on their head, and they call them stjärngossar.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1And that's like star boys.
Speaker 2Mm.
Speaker 1Yeah, those are the people in the Lucia Torg.
Speaker 2Lucia Train.
Speaker 1Yeah, parade thing, Parade yeah, and that's a popular thing in Sweden, I guess.
Lucia's Gory Origins in Sweden
Speaker 2Yeah, I guess so.
Speaker 1And we get to have some special fika for the day. Yeah, with saffron, saffron.
Speaker 2Saffron.
Speaker 1Saffron and you don't like them.
Speaker 2I don't.
Speaker 1What am I forgetting?
Speaker 2I don't know You're supposed to be telling me.
Speaker 1Okay, no, but I think that's it.
Speaker 2Can we talk about the origin of Lucia?
Speaker 1Okay, the actual story. Did you look that up now?
Speaker 2Yes, Because I heard that it's kind of gory. It's a little horrific.
Speaker 1Yeah, and she has a red band across her stomach. She got stabbed in the stomach or something. Maybe, I think so.
Speaker 2I'm going to tell you it is Friday the 13th.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And it is Lucia.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2So I think it's fitting to tell the story yeah, I would say she's.
Speaker 1She was pretty unlucky yeah, it's possible.
Speaker 2I don't actually know, so I'm going to be learning as well okay brought to you by open eyes okay that, that's cool. So the actual origin of Lucia, swedish Lucia, the origin of Swedish Lucia is a blend of pagan, christian and folkloric traditions, with historical and mythical elements intertwined. It has roots in pre-Christian solstice celebrations, medieval saint veneration and later adaptations during the Protestant Reformation. Lots of words.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2Don't know what I just said.
Speaker 1You know what? Yep, I'm glad I'm not doing the reading this time.
Speaker 2Yes, there's a lot of words, wow, yeah, before Christianity reached Scandinavia, the Winter winter solstice was a significant event. The longest night of the year, often around December 13th in the old Julian calendar, marked a time when supernatural beings such as trolls, spirits and other dark forces were believed to be particularly active. Souls, spirits and other dark forces were believed to be particularly active. Fires and light rituals were used to ward off evil and symbolize the return of the sun. So you're supposed to summon the sun with fire. We should have a bonfire, yeah, to ward off the evil spirits.
Speaker 1Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2And return of the sun. So the name and central figure of Swedish Lucia are derived from Saint Lucia of Syracuse.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2That's where she's from.
Speaker 1Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2She's from Sicily.
Speaker 1Oh, okay.
Speaker 2She's Italian, that's Sicily, that answers that question. Yeah, what question when Lucia came from.
Speaker 1Okay, yeah, sicily, isn't that like the mafia?
Speaker 2She might have been a part of the mafia.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2She was a gang leader, but we were wondering where she was from, because she's not Swedish, but she's Italian.
Speaker 1Okay, yes, okay.
Speaker 2Or we were wondering if there were other countries that celebrated as well, that I don't know. Maybe Italy.
Speaker 1Yeah, maybe. I don't know, or they don't really like her, so they're like you, take her Sweden.
Speaker 2Yeah, you can take this one.
Speaker 1Yeah, go ahead, we don't need it.
Speaker 2No one. Yeah, go ahead, we don't need it.
Speaker 1No, lucia was born into a wealthy roman family and secretly converted to christian. Christian, oh.
Speaker 2And so she transformed no man she's a transformer no trans person christianity oh, okay at a a time when Christians were persecuted, she vowed to remain a virgin and devote her life to helping the poor Lucia's, a virgin.
Speaker 1Yeah, we knew that.
Speaker 2Yes, it's been, it's official now. Okay, now we know this is a fact. Lucia was subjected to horrific torture because she refused to marry. Maybe, yeah, but according to legend, this is what happened to her. Her eyes were gouged out, though some versions say she removed them herself to deter suitors. Men.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2Possible husbands. Her eyes disappeared.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, did she close her eyes?
Speaker 2I think so yeah, like I have no eyes. She was sentenced to be burned alive, but the flames miraculously did not consume her she's a witch, oh, okay, so.
Speaker 1So they um made a crown on her head instead, maybe.
Speaker 2Maybe. Finally, she was killed by a sword to the throat. Oh, to the throat, Yep.
Speaker 1I thought it was the stomach it should be a scarf, a red scarf instead.
Speaker 2That would be more accurate.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Because of these gruesome elements, lucia became a-sodiated. No, that's not a word A-sodiated, a word Associated, associated.
Speaker 1She became a soda.
Speaker 2Associated with light, as her name means light and vision, often depicted. She's blind, yeah, because.
Speaker 1Blinding light.
Speaker 2Her eyes were gouged out. Yeah, yeah, that usually means blind yeah, um, often depicted, oh my gosh vision. Often depicted holding a pair of eyes on a plate so much of this has been lost over the years.
Speaker 1Could you picture Lucia doing that, holding ice instead?
Speaker 2Oh no, that would be weird if they did that. In Swedish folklore, december 13th was a dangerous night, when supernatural forces were at their peak and animals could talk. People stayed awake and lit candles to ward off evil. Over time, this practice merged with the Christian commemoration of Lucia.
Speaker 1Yeah, did you hear the bunny talk today?
Speaker 2Yeah, he was acting weird. I thought he was whispering in my ear when he was cuddling me. She is a witch. She's a witch. In some early Swedish traditions, Lucia was not a benign figure.
Speaker 1I thought you were going to say banana.
Speaker 2She was not a banana.
Speaker 1Few people know something like that.
Speaker 2Yeah, I guess so, but she was a frightening creature person known as Lucy that should be my name.
Speaker 1Lucy, lucy, lucy.
Speaker 2Lucy. Lucy in the sky. Lucy in the sky. She was thought to ride through the skies on December 13th In the sky. In the sky With diamonds.
Speaker 1Lucy in the sky.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, accompanied by evil spirits.
Speaker 1I'm sorry, lucy in the sky with raisins.
Speaker 2Right People believe she punished those who disobeyed solstice customs Solosystem, or failed to prepare for Christmas. That is not okay. No, failing to prepare for Christmas.
Speaker 1You should not fail at that. No.
Speaker 2No, you should not no.
Speaker 1No, you should not.
Speaker 2No, so today, like you said, the Swedish Lucia celebration is a festive, family friendly tradition. Girls dressed as Lucia lead candlelit processions, singing traditional songs. However, the tradition retains echoes of its darker origins, like the crown of candles reflects both St Lucia's martyrdom, martyrdom.
Speaker 1And the solstice Dumb martyr.
Speaker 2Yeah, and the solstice fires and the procession carries a sense of ritualistic order symbolizing the banishment of darkness. So really, it's a blend of light and dark, pagan and Christian, with its gory origins and supernatural folklore lending depth to our current cultural celebration. Huh, and that was that.
Speaker 1Very cool.
Speaker 2And now I want to change my name to Lucia Lucy, lucy.
Speaker 1Lucy, that's my Swedish name. My name to Lucia Lucy, lucy, lucy.
Speaker 2That's my Swedish name.
Speaker 1Okay, lussan.
Speaker 2Lussan. Yeah, what's that?
Speaker 1I don't know, it's like a nickname for I don't know. Is it? I don't know, but it must be a nickname for something. Lucia.
Speaker 2Lucia.
Speaker 1But since your name is Lauren, you should be like Luran.
Speaker 2I don't know.
Speaker 1It doesn't sound great.
Speaker 2No, it doesn't.
Speaker 1Luran Loris, I like that though.
